In the previous article, we looked at what dermal fillers can do, which the most popular dermal fillers are and how much time they can take to take effect as well as how long they will last. In this concluding part, we will look at other aspects associated with dermal fillers.
You need to know well in advance what the treatment will feel like, and whether there will be pain:
There are needles involved, which means that there is bound to be a little pain involved, but while most people are able to take the same, you can always ask for some sort of sedation or anaesthetic. As a matter of fact, most good doctors will apply a topical anaesthetic, which will reduce the pain and discomfort to a large extent. Once the topical cream has been applied, you will be asked to wait close to half an hour and this will reduce the pain. In addition, the anaesthetic will also reduce the chance of bruising as the blood vessels will be slightly constricted.
There are certain places, which prefer the method of a dental block – a flavoured gel will be applied under the skin and a small amount of a numbing solution will be injected into the gum line. This should allow you to feel numb for about two hours. Once the procedure has been completed, you might apply an ice pack, as this will reduce the swelling as well as the possible discomfort.
It would be best that you ask well in advance how you will look immediately after the dermal filler has been injected:
Normally, when you go for your first consultation, your doctor will tell you what you need to do in order to ensure that you are safe and pain free, post procedure. If you have made sure that you heed to the given advice, then you will have little to be worried about. There is little downtime, post the dermal filler injections and most people are able to return to their normal routines, immediately.
There could be a little swelling or bruising, but in most cases, this is considered normal and you will not have to do much about it. Both these side effects, should disappear within two to three days. In very rare cases, people tend to have excessive swelling or puffiness post Restylane injections, especially around the lips. This however is temporary and can be easily covered up with makeup. In most cases, when people switch over to Juvederm, they seem to have little to no problem at all.
A wise person would ask how many repeat procedures will be required and when they will have to be scheduled:
All this will be dependent on which areas of the face or body you are getting treated, which kind of dermal filler is being chosen for you and the manner in which your body responds to the filler. Ideally, the fillers last anywhere between three to nine months, and when you start feeling that your skin is sagging yet again, you could go in for a repeat procedure. Your doctor will also tell you when you might be required to come in for maintenance procedures.
Before you decide that you want to get dermal fillers, you need to make sure that you are the ideal candidate for the same:
Not all people are ideal candidates for dermal fillers and here are the people who are not:
- Pregnant women
- Women who are breastfeeding
- People who tend to bruise rather easily
You will also have to keep in mind, what all you need to avoid, in order to make sure that the bruising is kept to the minimal:
- You will be asked to avoid certain medications such as Aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil and Exedrin, at least one week before the injections as well as two to three days, after.
- While multivitamin might be considered ok, you will be asked to avoid vitamin E a minimum of two to three days before and after the procedure.
- You will also be asked to avoid any vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours after the injections.
Make sure that you ask about the possible side effects:
No matter how great a dermal filler is or how experienced the doctor injecting it is, there is always the chance of a side effect. Some of the most common side effects associated with dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane include:
- If you have had a cold sores or facial herpes simplex before, chances are that you might have to face yet another outbreak of the same.
- There could be swelling for two to three days, especially if you have had dermal fillers injected into the lips.
- There could be light bruising or even a slight blush on the area where the injections were made.
- If you take anti-inflammatory drugs, you can expect bleeding or even increased bruising.
There are also certain other things that you will have to keep in mind, and your doctor should tell you about:
- There will be some amount of redness, swelling, itching, tenderness and even discoloration immediately after the injection. Now while these are normal and temporary, it is best that you not get the same done, a day before an important event.
- The amount of time the results will last are dependent on various factors such as the area where it is being injected, the manner in which your body responds to the filler and which filler is being used. You should be mentally prepared to be in and out of the doctor’s office, for maintenance sessions.
- Simply because the results look good on one person, does not mean that they have to look great on you as well, which is why, you need to think multiple times, before actually getting the injections.
